Neuro-Oncology: The Journey of a Patient-Centered Team Based Care Approach

Overview

This program delves into the complexities of neuro-oncology care, highlighting challenges unique to this patient population. Participants will review standard and emerging treatments for common CNS tumors, including low-grade gliomas, and explore strategies for managing treatment side effects. The session also emphasizes the social and cognitive impacts of CNS tumors and the importance of a multidisciplinary care approach. 

Target Audience

This CME initiative was designed for oncologists, surgeons, radiation oncologists, NPs, PAs, pharmacists, nurses, and other healthcare professionals involved in the treatment of patients with cancer.

Learning Objectives

  1. Discuss unique challenges of caring for neuro-oncology patients.
  2. Review standard treatments for common CNS tumors including recent advances in low grade gliomas.
  3. Review common side effects of neuro-oncology treatments and management strategies.
  4. Discuss the social cognitive effects of CNS tumors and value of a team- based care approach.

Alisha T. DeTroye is the Director of Advanced Practice for the Atrium Health Wake Forest Baptist region. In this role, she provides strategic leadership and vision for the the overall APP workforce of approximately 1000 providers. Alisha received her BS in Health and Exercise Science in 2000 from Wake Forest University and graduated from the Wake Forest PA Program in 2004 with a Masters in Medical Science in PA Studies. She continues part-time clinical practice in neuro-oncology.

She is an adjunct Assistant Professor with the Wake Forest Department of PA studies. She is active in PA leadership on the regional, state and national levels. She is a past President of Piedmont Association of PAs, NCAPA and serves as a delegate to the AAPA HOD. She is active in APAO as a member of the CME, advocacy and education committees. She received the 2021 APAO Lifetime Achievement Award.
