Management of Cancer-Associated Thrombosis (CAT)

SELF STUDY / ENDURING - ESTIMATED TIME TO COMPLETE ACTIVITY: 50 Minutes

Overview

This program offers a comprehensive introduction to managing cancer-associated thrombosis (CAT), emphasizing the various factors that increase the risk in outpatient settings. Participants will delve into the development of patient care strategies that effectively utilize direct oral anticoagulants (DOACs) for both preventing and treating venous thromboembolism (VTE), in line with the latest guidelines. The session will also equip attendees with the skills to recognize patients who would benefit from primary thromboprophylaxis and deepen their understanding of the complexities surrounding CAT risk factors.

Target Audience

This CME initiative was designed for oncologists, surgeons, radiation oncologists, NPs, PAs, pharmacists, nurses, and other healthcare professionals involved in the treatment of patients with cancer.

Learning Objectives

  1. Describe the patient-related, cancer-related, and treatment-related factors that elevate the risk of CAT to support timely recognition and intervention in affected patients
  2. Identify patients who are eligible for primary thromboprophylaxis for prevention of CAT
  3. Devise a patient care plan that incorporates direct oral anticoagulants (DOACs) for preventing and treating VTE in non-hospitalized cancer patients based upon current guideline recommendations
