APP Oncology Journal Club - April 2026

- The APP Oncology Journal Club is a quarterly virtual (online) event. 

Overview

This journal club will examine selected clinical studies in oncology with a focus on their design, rigor, and relevance to contemporary oncology practice.Participants will review the methodology of each study to assess validity and potential sources of bias. Attention will also be given to key safety outcomes,
including the reporting and interpretation of adverse events and their clinical significance. Through this analysis, participants will strengthen their ability to appraise oncology literature and apply evidence -based findings to clinical decision-making.

Upon completion of this journal club, you will:

  1. Discuss the methodology, validity, and key safety outcomes of each clinical study
  2. Evaluate the studies' results in the context of current standards of care in oncology.

Target Audience

This activity is intended for oncology pharmacists, pharmacy techs, and pharmacy residents who are involved in the treatment of cancer patients

Sandra Sepulveda, is an Advanced Nurse Practitioner with over 22 years of comprehensive nursing experience spanning Bone Marrow Transplant, Hematology/Oncology, and Critical Care across inpatient and ambulatory settings. She earned her Master of Science in Nursing with Honors from South University and holds
advanced certifications including Blood and Marrow Transplant (BMTCN) and Advanced Oncology Certified Nurse Practitioner (AOCNP).

Ms. Sepulveda is a dedicated educator and mentor, she has served as a preceptor for nurse practitioners, medical, and nursing students, as well as a study coordinator and educator for nationally accredited (APPFA) BMT and APP fellowship programs. Additionally, she has presented at regional and national conferences and contributed to peer-reviewed publications addressing oncology, infectious complications, patient frailty, and transplant outcomes.

Mariadela Matute has over 19 years of experience in adult oncology with 14 of those years working as a nurse practitioner specializing in the care and management of stem cell transplant, malignant hematology, and now immunotherapy patients. Mari received her BSN and MSN from the University of Miami and is currently the supervisor for the inpatient bone marrow transplant and immunotherapy advanced practice providers.

Meilin Diaz-Paez is a DNP-prepared advanced registered nurse practitioner (ARNP) at University of Miami Sylvester Comprehensive Cancer Center’s Division of Transplantation and Cellular Therapy (TCT) in Miami, Florida. Dr. Diaz-Paez has been an accelerant in the advancement of the Division of Transplantation and Cellular Therapy program at the University of Miami’s Sylvester Comprehensive Cancer Center (UM SCCC) since their start in 2011. She is the Supervisor for the Advanced Practice Providers in her division. She is involved a various of quality improvement initiatives within the TCT program and is an active member in the American Society for Transplantation and Cellular Therapy. She is certified for both bone marrow transplant (BMTCN), and advanced oncology nursing practice (AOCNP) through the Oncology Nursing Society (ONS). 

She has various publications in peer reviewed journals and has authored abstracts for the Association of Transplantation and Cellular Therapy (ASTCT). In her clinical role as an ARNP, she provides direct patient care in collaboration with a group of physicians to adult patients undergoing hematopoietic stem cell transplant (HSCT), chimeric antigen receptor T-cell therapy (CAR-T), and tumor infiltrating lymphocyte therapy (TILs) in the outpatient setting. She also serves as a sub-principal investigator in various clinicals trials involving graft-versus-host disease (GvHD) and cellular therapy.
