The Psychosocial Aspects of Nursing: Emotional Intelligence, Empathy, and Burnout
SELF STUDY / ENDURING - ESTIMATED TIME TO COMPLETE ACTIVITY: 46 Minutes
Overview
This program explores the psychosocial challenges in nursing, focusing on emotional intelligence, empathy, and resilience. Participants will learn strategies to manage stress, prevent burnout, and strengthen teamwork, while applying cognitive and affective empathy to enhance patient care and professional well-being in demanding healthcare environments.
Target Audience
This CME initiative was designed for oncologists, surgeons, radiation oncologists, NPs, PAs, pharmacists, nurses, and other healthcare professionals involved in the treatment of patients with cancer.
Learning Objectives
- Describe emotional intelligence and its core components: self-awareness, self-regulation, motivation, empathy, and social skills
- Differentiate between cognitive and affective empathy, and explain how both support patient care yet may contribute to compassion fatigue without emotional regulation and self-care
- Recognize how emotional intelligence can mitigate against the onset and progression of compassion fatigue and identify practical, evidence-based strategies to enhance self-awareness, manage stress, set healthy boundaries, and improve personal well-being
