Target Practice: Cellular Therapies, Side Effects, and Making Sense of the Acronyms
SELF STUDY / ENDURING - ESTIMATED TIME TO COMPLETE ACTIVITY: 51 Minutes
Overview
Explore the evolving landscape of cellular immunotherapies through a comprehensive review of CAR T-cell and tumor-infiltrating lymphocyte (TIL) therapies, including mechanisms of action, approved indications, emerging clinical trials, and key differences between treatment approaches. This activity highlights the immunologic principles underlying antigen recognition, T-cell activation, and cytokine signaling while emphasizing practical management of treatment-related toxicities such as cytokine release syndrome (CRS), ICANS, IL-2–related adverse effects, and Parkinsonian neurotoxicity associated with select CAR T-cell therapies.
Target Audience
This CME initiative was designed for oncologists, surgeons, radiation oncologists, NPs, PAs, pharmacists, nurses, and other healthcare professionals involved in the treatment of patients with cancer.
Learning Objectives
- Describe the principles of CAR T cell therapy and TIL therapy to support informed clinical decision-making and patient education
- Explain the pathophysiology of cytokine release syndrome and evaluate strategies for its recognition and management
- Recognize and manage neurologic toxicities associated with CAR T cell and TIL therapies, including ICANS, altered mentation, and Parkinsonian symptoms
- Identify and address less commonly discussed adverse effects related to CAR T cell and TIL therapies in clinical practice
