Overview

Participants will investigate the comprehensive domain of phase I clinical trials in cancer therapy, highlighting their critical role in advancing treatment options through the evaluation of new drugs and dosing strategies. The session will focus on differentiating among various trial designs and their pivotal roles in modern oncology drug development. Additionally, the complexities of patient eligibility and trial navigation will be addressed, emphasizing the challenges these factors pose in patient management and care.

Target Audience

This CME initiative was designed for oncologists, surgeons, radiation oncologists, NPs, PAs, pharmacists, nurses, and other healthcare professionals involved in the treatment of patients with cancer.

Learning Objectives

  1. Identify the key elements of oncology phase I clinical trials, including trial purpose, primary objective, and endpoints
  2. Outline general design concepts for phase I clinical trials
  3. Describe the U.S. Food and Drug Administration (FDA) initiatives emphasized in modern phase I clinical trials, including Project Optimus and Project FrontRunner
  4. Review strategies the advanced practice providers can employ to help patients access and navigate clinical trials in the community setting

Dr. Justin Call, is the Director of Clinical Research at START Mountain Region in Salt Lake City, Utah. He received his undergraduate degree from the University of Utah, and his medical degree from the University of Colorado Health Sciences Center in Denver, Colorado. During his academic training, Dr. Call was elected to numerous honor societies, including the Golden Key Honor Society, Phi Kappa Phi Honor Society, and the Alpha Omega Alpha Honor Medical Society.  

Dr. Call completed residency training in Internal Medicine and fellowship training in Hematology and Medical Oncology at the University of Colorado Health Sciences Center. He is board certified in Hematology and Medical Oncology. Dr. Call’s clinical interests include drug development of new anticancer agents, with a special interest in gynecologic cancers and hematologic malignancies. He has been the principal investigator / co-investigator of over 50 cancer clinical trials. Dr. Call is a member of the American Society of Clinical Oncology, the American Society of Hematology, and the American Association for Cancer Research.
