Anxiety and Clinical Depression: Treating Beyond the Physical Complications of Cancer

Depression and anxiety are often comorbid conditions in patients diagnosed with cancer and the COVID-19 pandemic has exacerbated the situation. In this webcast, expert faculty will review the risk factors for developing anxiety and depression in patients with cancer and tools that can help screen for and diagnose anxiety and depression throughout the course of cancer treatment. Faculty will use a case study to illustrate how to identify and assess symptomatic patients and discuss the range of non-pharmacologic and pharmacologic treatment options available. Additionally, faculty will discuss suicide risk and assessment.

Target Audience

This CME initiative was designed for oncologists, surgeons, radiation oncologists, NPs, PAs, pharmacists, nurses, and other healthcare professionals involved in the treatment of patients with cancer.

Learning Objectives

1. Discuss the risk factors that contribute to symptoms of anxiety and clinical depression in cancer patients and survivors

2. Review the differential diagnosis for anxiety and depression

3. Describe how symptoms manifest in patients throughout the course of cancer treatment to aid clinicians in identifying symptomatic patients

4. Identify pharmacologic options for treating symptoms of anxiety and clinical depression in cancer patients and survivors

Faculty

Pritham, Raj MD                                                                                                               

Dr. Y Pritham Raj is originally from Maryland and received his BA from the Johns Hopkins University and his MD from the University of Maryland School of Medicine.  He completed combined residency training in Internal Medicine and Psychiatry at Duke University Medical Center and remains on the Duke faculty.  He moved to Portland, Oregon in 2006 to begin teaching at Oregon Health & Science University where he is Associate Professor of Medicine. In 2015 he became the Chairman of Behavioral Health at Adventist Health Portland. He currently serves as the Medical Director of the Emotional Wellness Center which was named a finalist for program of the year by the AABH in 2018. 

Dr. Raj is a clinician-educator whose passion lies in teaching patients, students, and colleagues the evidence-based principles of wellness using a mind-body framework. His research interests have ranged widely from memory disorders to depression in the critically ill to obesity. He has lectured internationally on a variety of med-psych topics.  He enjoys spending time with his three children and loves to write, travel, and play music.  He is also a die-hard fan of the Washington Redskins.
