Current Treatment Paradigms for Head and Neck Cancers

Overview
This session will review various anatomic subtypes of head and neck cancers and their therapeutic paradigms. Participants will explore radiation treatments used in head and neck cancers and approaches in preventing and managing related toxicities.
Target Audience
This CME initiative was designed for oncologists, surgeons, radiation oncologists, NPs, PAs, pharmacists, nurses, and other healthcare professionals involved in the treatment of patients with cancer.
Learning Objectives
1. Describe the different anatomic subtypes of head and neck cancers
2. Review the general treatment paradigms of head and neck cancers based on subtype
3. Identify the role of definitive, adjuvant and palliative radiation treatments for head and neck cancers
4. Recognize common side effects and strategies for managing toxicities associated with radiation treatments for head and neck cancers
Faculty
Samual Francis, MD, MS
Dr. Francis is a radiation oncologist at Comprehensive Cancer Centers with extensive experience using external beam treatment modalities as well as brachytherapy. He also has expertise in advanced CT simulation, treatment planning and image-guided radiation therapy (IGRT).
Prior to joining Comprehensive Cancer Centers, Dr. Francis was enrolled in the Radiation Oncology Residency Program at the University of Utah Huntsman Cancer Hospital. He served as chief resident there in 2017. His research and findings have appeared in several industry publications including Journal of Applied Clinical Medical Physics, International Journal of Radiation Oncology, Biology, Physics and Journal of Clinical Oncology. He also won the Radiological Society of North America Roentgen Research Award for his work in 2018
