Integrating Primary Palliative Care Skills into Daily Oncology Practice

Palliative care focuses on relieving the symptoms and stress of any serious illness, ideally alongside curative treatment. In this webcast, expert faculty distinguish between primary and specialty palliative care and the roles of each in oncology practice. Faculty will use case studies to illustrate how advanced practice providers can utilize available tools and develop strategies for early care of patients with cancer. Advanced care practitioners can improve their palliative care practices by participating in this program. Subsequently, patients and their families will see a better quality of life throughout treatment.

Target Audience

This CME initiative was designed for oncologists, surgeons, radiation oncologists, NPs, PAs, pharmacists, nurses, and other healthcare professionals involved in the treatment of patients with cancer.

Learning Objectives

1. Distinguish the indications for primary versus specialty palliative care in oncology practice domains

2. Identify tools APPs ​can use to address palliative care needs of oncology patients

3. Develop strategies for integrating early palliative care for the recently diagnosed oncology patients

4. Demonstrate the implementation of primary palliative care in patient case scenarios

Faculty

Barbara Reville, DNP, ANP-BC, ACHPN

Barbara Reville, DNP, ANP-BC, ACHPN, is an oncology nurse practitioner with advanced certification in hospice and palliative nursing. Her clinical experience includes 15 years of providing inpatient palliative care consultation and an extensive oncology​nursing background. She is Nurse Director for the Adult Palliative Care Division and Palliative Nurse Practitioner Fellowship Director at Dana-Farber Cancer Institute and Brigham and Women's Hospital, Boston, MA.

Barbara served in director roles for palliative care services at Thomas Jefferson University Hospital and the Hospital of the University of Pennsylvania in Philadelphia. She teaches in the Harvard Medical School Center for Palliative Care and directs the Art and Science of Palliative Nursing Course.

Scholarly interests include palliative nursing communication and post-graduate training for advanced practice nurses.
