From MGUS to Multiple Myeloma: Understanding Diagnosis, Disease Progression and the Latest Treatment Updates

Overview

Strengthen recognition of clinical and laboratory findings that warrant evaluation for monoclonal gammopathy and multiple myeloma through this activity. The session will review the diagnostic workup, including serum and urine protein studies, immunofixation, serum free light-chain testing, and appropriate imaging. Additionally, the program will distinguish MGUS, smoldering myeloma, light-chain disease, and active multiple myeloma based on disease-defining features and progression risk. Participants will also explore contemporary treatment strategies, including induction regimens, autologous stem cell transplantation, maintenance therapy, bispecific antibodies, and CAR-T therapy.

  1. Describe the workup of patients with suspected gammopathy and differentiate between monoclonal and polyclonal patterns
  2. Apply diagnostic criteria to identify MGUS, CRAB, Multiple Myeloma (MM), and Light Chain Disease

Brian Kim, MD is a hematologist oncologist currently working at Optum Cancer Care in Las Vegas.  He did his undergraduate studies at Brown University in Rhode Island and went back home to Oklahoma for his medical school at the University of Oklahoma College of Medicine.  His internship, residence and fellowship were all done at Emory University in Atlanta, Georgia.  He was at Sutter Medical Group until October 2024 when he retired.  

Dr. Kim moved to Reno Nevada in 2025 and has worked at Optum Cancer Care in Las Vegas since April 2025.  One of his passions is to share his insider tips and knowledge of Epic and to help with efficiency tips to improve a clinician's day using voice recognition software and Epic together.  Of note, he has also been a professional USTA tennis umpire and worked as a line umpire at various professional tennis tournaments around the country.  He has worked at the US Open in New York as an umpire until the computerized line calling phased out human line umpires.
