Oncology Emergencies: Rapid Identification and Treatment Strategies

Overview

Participants will explore the critical area of oncological emergencies, focusing on rapid identification and treatment strategies essential for improving patient outcomes. Led by Eric Zack, DNP, RN, ACNP-BC, AOCN, BMTCN, this session will cover both metabolic and structural emergencies. The course will focus on the critical role of early detection by utilizing relevant assessment data and will cover essential treatment strategies aimed at lowering mortality risk. Participants will also learn to identify criteria indicating successful resolution of these emergencies, ultimately improving the quality of patient care in challenging oncologic situations.

Target Audience

This CME initiative was designed for oncologists, surgeons, radiation oncologists, NPs, PAs, pharmacists, nurses, and other healthcare professionals involved in the treatment of patients with cancer.

  1. Discuss pertinent assessment data that effectively and rapidly identifies select emergencies in the oncology patient.
  2. Describe key treatment strategies that reduce mortality risk for oncology-related emergencies.
  3. Identify patient criteria that suggest successful resolution(s) of these oncology-related emergencies.

Eric Zack is a doctoral-prepared advanced practice nurse working as a full-time Clinical Assistant Professor at Loyola University-Chicago in the Marcella Niehoff School of Nursing. He teaches medical/surgical nursing and pharmacology in their undergraduate nursing program. He has previously taught Cancer Pathophysiology and Disease Management at both Loyola University and at Rush University for the graduate level.

Clinically, he works part-time as an RN3 on an inpatient Hematology and Hematopoietic Stem Cell Transplant unit at Rush University Medical Center located in Chicago. He has authored numerous peer-reviewed publications in a variety of journals and textbooks, as well as several poster and podium presentations at local, regional, national, and international nursing conferences. He holds 3 professional certifications (ACNP-BC, AOCN, and BMTCN), and has volunteered his time, energy, and expertise to assist several professional nursing organizations such as ONCC, ONS, CCONS, and STTI.
