
Palliation in Practice: Practical Tools for Supporting Oncology Patients

Overview
Participants in this session will gain practical insights into managing the complex side effects associated with oncologic treatments. Through case studies, attendees will learn strategies for effectively communicating with patients and families during challenging conversations about prognosis and treatment goals. Additionally, the session will explore the roles and distinctions between palliative and hospice care, emphasizing the importance of timely referrals and addressing common misconceptions about end-of-life care.
Target Audience
This CME initiative was designed for oncologists, surgeons, radiation oncologists, NPs, PAs, pharmacists, nurses, and other healthcare professionals involved in the treatment of patients with cancer.

Dr. Windler has been providing palliative care at Compass Oncology in Portland, OR since 2020. After his combined residency in Internal Medicine and Pediatrics, he remained at the University of Alabama at Birmingham to complete a fellowship in Hospice and Palliative Medicine. This expanded his skillset to empower and support patients with serious medical conditions. He now works with oncology patients within Compass’s multi-specialty outpatient cancer centers. He blends the gentle tone of pediatrics, the holistic view of internal medicine, and the empathetic resourcefulness of palliative medicine to maximize the clinical insight and quality of life for his patients in all stages of their treatment journey.
