Seasonal Vaccines in Oncology Practice: From Risk Assessment to Patient Uptake

Overview
This activity reviews seasonal vaccination in oncology practice, with emphasis on assessing infection risk and balancing vaccine benefits, timing, and safety in patients with solid tumors, hematologic malignancies, and transplant histories. Participants will examine guideline-directed approaches to COVID-19, influenza, RSV, pneumococcal, hepatitis B, and other recommended vaccines for immunocompromised populations. The program also addresses vaccination-status assessment, coordination with oncology, transplant, pharmacy, and primary care teams, and practical communication strategies to address vaccine hesitancy and improve vaccine uptake.

Shawn Griffin, PharmD, BCOP is a Board Certified Oncology Pharmacist and Health Sciences Associate Clinical Professor in the Department of Clinical Pharmacy Practice at the University of California, Irvine (UCI) School of Pharmacy & Pharmaceutical Sciences. He practices within the Hematopoietic Stem Cell Transplantation and Cellular Therapy Program at the Chao Family Comprehensive Cancer Center. Prior to joining UCI, Griffin worked as a Hematology/Stem Cell Transplant pharmacist at Indiana University Health for five years. He received PharmD from the UNC Eshelman School of Pharmacy and completed a PGY1 Pharmacy and PGY2 Oncology Pharmacy Residency at the University of Florida Health Shands Hospital.

Joseph Erwin Ngo Salunday, DNP, APRN, FNP-C is a Bone Marrow Transplant Nurse Practitioner at UC Irvine Health’s Chao Family Comprehensive Cancer Center. His clinical practice focuses on post–stem cell transplant survivorship, management of graft-versus-host disease, and care of complex immunocompromised patients. He maintains advanced procedural competencies in diagnostic and therapeutic hematologic interventions and practices in the ambulatory infusion setting. Dr. Salunday earned his Doctor of Nursing Practice from the University of California, Irvine and brings a strong critical care background to his advanced practice role. He is passionate about interdisciplinary collaboration and advancing high-quality care for transplant patients.
