Overview

Identify the pathophysiology, manifestations, and management of sickle cell disease. The session will cover evidence-based management of acute complications, including vaso-occlusive pain episodes, acute chest syndrome, splenic sequestration, infection, and stroke. The program will also review disease-modifying and curative options, including hydroxyurea, L-glutamine, crizanlizumab, hematopoietic stem cell transplantation, and gene therapy. Through case studies, participants will gain practical insights into pain management, transfusion strategies, preventive screening, and coordinated multidisciplinary care.

Learning Objectives

  1. Describe the pathophysiology of sickle cell disease (SCD) and how it leads to hemolysis and vaso-occlusion 
  2. Recognize common clinical manifestations and complications of SCD and treatment approach
  3. Identify evidence-based disease-modifying and curative treatment options for SCD
  4. Recognize supportive care strategies for patients with SCD, including vaccines, lifestyle modifications, and psychosocial support

Target Audience:

This activity is intended for oncology nurse practitioners, physician assistants, nurses, clinical pharmacists, and other healthcare providers involved in the care of patients with cancer.

Tara Alin, ANP-BC is a board-certified nurse practitioner specializing in sickle cell disease. She practices at the UNC Sickle Cell Clinic, where she provides comprehensive care to individuals living with sickle cell disease. Her work focuses on improving access to medical and mental health services and strengthening care coordination for underserved populations. Tara is deeply committed to health equity and community partnership. She currently serves on the North Carolina Governor’s Appointed Council on Sickle Cell Disease and chairs the Council’s Legislative Committee.

Sherri Ann Morris, AGPCNP-BC is an Adult Gerontology Primary Care Nurse Practitioner Board Certified who joined hematology in 2015 as an Infusion NP. She transitioned into the role of Sickle Cell Provider in 2019. Previously, she worked in the Cardiothoracic Intensive Care Unit at UNC Health as a Registered Nurse. Sherri is interested in sickle cell disease management. She focuses attention on inpatient care with transitions to outpatient as well as outpatient management. Other interests are cardio-pulmonary changes in patients with Sickle Cell Disease.
