Strategies for Addressing the Unique Health Needs of Aging Patients with Cancer

Older adults comprise a large proportion of patients with cancer and caring for these older patients has unique challenges as a result of comorbidities, frailty, polypharmacy, psychosocial issues, and others. This webcast will review geriatric principles and care plan strategies as they relate to the specific needs of older adults with cancer.

Target Audience

This CME initiative was designed for oncologists, surgeons, radiation oncologists, NPs, PAs, pharmacists, nurses, and other healthcare professionals involved in the treatment of patients with cancer.

1. Determine the unique challenges of older adult cancer patients and describe how these impact care
2. Outline the importance of a multidisciplinary team collaboration in creating a care plan that addresses unique issues of older adults with cancer
3. Develop strategies for applying geriatric metrics in the face of healthcare worker shortages

Faculty

Ashley Rosko, MD

Dr. Rosko is an Associate Professor of Medicine in the Division of Hematology at The Ohio State University (OSU) and an active member of the Cancer Control Program at the OSU Comprehensive Cancer Center. Her research is in geriatric oncology focused on health outcomes of patients with hematologic malignancy, including multiple myeloma and bone marrow transplant. Dr. Rosko created and directs a multi-disciplinary clinic to support older adults with hematologic malignancy founded in the principles of geriatric oncology. She is funded by the K23 career development award that allows her to strengthen her health outcomes and translational research skills. Dr. Rosko’s long- term goal is to improve clinical outcomes of older adults with hematologic malignancy. Her objective is to refine clinical care by incorporating assessments of physiologic age into clinical trial design by using serum biomarkers and standardized tools to globally evaluate the health of older adults.
