Urgent Oncology: Strategies for Outpatient Management

Each year, about 30 million emergency department visits in the US are related to cancer. In this webcast, expert faculty will discuss outpatient strategies for managing patients with cancer, including how to identify and manage oncologic emergencies. Faculty will use case studies to illustrate outpatient urgent care evaluation and management strategies that can help prevent emergency department visits. This presentation is designed to equip advanced practice providers with a variety of strategies to optimize patient care and improve their competence in anticipating and identifying treatment-related complications.

Target Audience

This CME initiative was designed for oncologists, surgeons, radiation oncologists, NPs, PAs, pharmacists, nurses, and other healthcare professionals involved in the treatment of patients with cancer.

Learning Objectives

1. Categorize the types of outpatient management strategies employed to care for patients presenting with urgent care needs in a community-based and an academic-based setting

2. Identify the signs and symptoms associated with cancer treatment-related complications for which patients are likely to seek urgent care

3. Make observations about how outpatient urgent care management strategies can help prevent emergency department visits in the absence of an urgent care clinic model

Marilyn Douglas, MSN, FNP-BC, OCN

Marilyn Douglas is a FNP with over 16 years of experience as an APN in hematology, oncology and BMT. Marilyn has an additional 10 years as an oncology RN . Over the last 7 years, Marilyn functioned as an APP manager and Director for the NYU Langone Medical Center in NYC where she focused on APN professional practice and education. Marilyn is also a seminar adjunct instructor for the NYU Meyers College of Nursing. She recently assumed the role of Executive Director of Nursing, Advanced Practice Providers at the City of Hope National Medical Center in Duarte Ca.
